Spectral Response (VNIR-SWIR) Associated with the Octahedral Sheet of Smectites

A mineralogical characterization of a group bentonite samples was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analysis inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), and visible-near infrared short-wave (VNIR-SWIR). As tested XRD, all are very pure, composed mainly smectites with small amounts impurities, such as quartz feldspar. The results the show high contents Al2O3 in except for COU(V), which has Fe2O3 R4, is trioctahedral smectite. Within VNIR-SWIR spectra, absorption feature characteristics due to presence Fe observed at lowest wavenumber while, SWIR region, absorptions related M-OH bonds there differences among according their octahedral content.
